R. Michael Daugherty, Two-Year College Choirs R&S Chair

R. Michael Daugherty is an Instructor of Music at Coastal Carolina Community College in

Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he has taught for the last twenty-six years. Since the mid-

1990s, when the college expanded its fulltime music faculty, his duties have included conducting

the Coastal Carolina Community Choir, teaching music theory and music appreciation, and

more recently conducting the Crystal Coast Community Orchestra. “At Coastal, we have tried

to meet the challenges of limited facilities by creating college-community performing groups

and utilizing both the existing talent and venues in our area. Collaboration has often been the

key to our success. Recent performances have included works ranging from Mozart’s Requiem

with the community orchestra to Irving Fine’s “Father William” with piano. I hope to

encourage this collaborative spirit during my term as an R & S chair.” Dr. Daugherty holds

degrees in music composition from The Ohio State University (D.M.A. and M.M.) and in English

and music composition from Denison University (B.A.).
